So I didn’t write anything about yesterday because truly, there wasn’t much to say. We checked out of our hotel, sat in their lounge for a few hours reading and watching Gilmore Girls dubbed into German, had the front desk call a taxi for us, arrived at the Salzburg train station, read there for an hour or two, and then read more on the train ride to Munich and the following train ride to Garmisch. Everything went well when we got to Edelweiss. Erin was on the list, and they did let me in without Mark, but I couldn’t get the deployed member rate. I tried. (Mark’s been seeing Edelweiss advertisements on AFN and they have been saying they’ll give a discount to deployed members. Discount isn’t good for spouses of deployed members, which is understandable but a load of crap, as I am just in need of a trip here as he is trying to live without him. But that’s another blog….)
Nothing exciting for dinner…a bacon cheeseburger and the beer sampler for Mark. Surprisingly, the hellis was my favorite, followed by the dunkel (sort of Newcastle flavored), then the Hef, and then the pilsner. The hotel is not too different than the other military hotels I’ve been in. Just a gorgeous backdrop. And I think it’s funny that all of the women who work here (and I say women because I haven’t seen a man working behind a desk yet) have their name and where they’re from in the United States on their nametag. It makes me feel like I am at Yellowstone.
Today was a bit more exciting. We took the two-mile hike to the train station and played in Munich for the day. (We probably logged about 10-11 miles today according to my watch.) The weather cooperated until the end, and, of course, it was at 5 p.m. when Erin wanted to see the Glockenspiel make its magic. So we’ll be back in Munich tomorrow at 11 a.m. to see it instead.
We went to the Deutches Museum, which is like the Smithsonian. I’m not going to lie. I think the Smithsonian is better and a much higher quality. Don’t get me wrong. There were many cool things to see at the Deutches Museum. I really like their aviation stuff, I thought having a ship in there was cool, and I thought they had a huge amount of neat printing stuff. The stuff I did like, though, didn’t have English translations. (There were some, but not on a lot of the technical things….) And I’ll admit, I enjoy going through aviation stuff more with Mark because he’s there to point out to me interesting things about the cockpit’s dials, can tell me why this engine is cool and important, and generally he just helps bring the museum alive. I felt very out of sorts without him, but I made sure to get plenty of pictures of him with the aircraft.
After the museum, we made our way to the Hofenbraus. I had a great onion soup, and the bratwurst was AMAZING. The beer was just OK. I had a hellis that had citrus and lemon added to it. I think I would have liked it better without that.
After Hofenbraus, we walked around the Marienplatz. We found a great candy shop mentioned in one of our tour books that had great chocolate but awful fillings. We may go back tomorrow for just plain old shockolade. We made another venture into H&M…which was way better than the H&M at home. Then we waited for the Glockenspiel to start moving at 5 p.m.. Then the clouds changed and rain started to come at 4:55…so we missed the Glockenspiel but made the 5:30 train, made it home before any rain came, and signed up for our trips to Neuschwanstein and the brewery.
The other part of this day that was eventful is that Erin, who is required to be on a gluten-free diet, had TWO pretzels and some of a beer. So, tomorrow will be eventful, too…either Erin will be sick and feel like crap or we will have discovered Erin can have one more pretzel if she takes twelve Advil beforehand.
So signing off for the night. I’m probably getting beer, wings, and fries for dinner downstairs, wishing Mark was here to split it all with me. I miss him a lot. Tomorrow’s agenda right now is Dachau, the Glockenspiel, and maybe something else in Munich. Many more days of fun ahead…so I can’t wait!
