Date Day and Snow Day!

So last Wednesday I had the best present…I was still off school, but Emma and Liam had school. Our day didn’t start off on time exactly since little man here decided to sleep late. Instead of getting out the door early, we hung out with him and dropped him off at Montana’s before the house cleaners arrived to do their monthly cleaning. (Also the best feeling…coming home from date day to a clean house!)

From there, Mark and I headed to the Adams Morgan with the intent of going to Smash, a record store. Mark hadn’t bought records since the boys were born, so I gave him the cash from my most recent photography session and let him have fun.

Smash, a small record store, my co-worker recommended, was great, but didn’t open on time. So we went to a small bakery, Rise Bakery, and tasted their gluten free goods. Mark said his cinnamon roll was just OK, but the banana bread I had was amazing.

Even after our visit to the bakery, Smash still wasn’t open so we  hit a local bookstore. Can I tell you how glorious it is visiting a bookstore without kids? Really, anything without kids is amazing. I love my kids with my entire heart and being, but Wednesday was a chance for me and Mark to remember to what it was like to be dual income no kids (dinks).

I had a total crush on Mark again watching him peruse teh book stacks, teaching me how to identify a book’s publisher, looking for a sci-fi book that his Poppy got him way back in the day.

We left the store empty-handed, hoping Smash was finally open. (Side note: Do you know what a disaster this would have been if we had attempted ANY of this with the kids in tow. Total, total disaster.)

Finally, Smash opened. It was a tiny little record shop, but we found quite a few records Mark had on his list. $120 later…we were on our way to lunch.

We couldn’t decide on a restaurant in Adams Morgan, and we had just pushed our blood sugar up, so off we went to try a restaurant one of my former Seton students had talked about a lot. Farmers, Founders, Bakers. It was near the White House…across the street actually from a camera shop that fixed a lens for me after Mark broke it (story for another blog).

Our late lunch was pretty tasty… and the perfect last day of winter break was rewarded with a bonus snow day! We got about four inches. The kids missed their second day back at school. We had frigid temps but got everyone bundled up in snow gear for a great 30 minutes of sledding and playing in the snow. Both boys like the snow now, which is awesome! It was a pretty perfect two days.

The world has no idea how much I am thankful to Mark for the life he has given me and how  much I am going to miss him during this year apart. I’m working hard at living in the moment and trying to be thankful. I have plenty to be thankful for.
