On the interview front, I had a good interview at and absolutely loved Providence. I like their Catholic identity…they have a good sense of mission and low tuition. They were really helping girls who needed it. It’s small…under 300 in the high school and just under 200 in the middle school. I’d LOVE to teach there and think I have a good shot at a job there. They are next door to Central Catholic, the Marianist all-boys’ school in San Antonio. Of course, I’d probably have the lowest salary there, and it is the farthest away from home. OH well. 🙂 They are doing a few more interviews but the principal said they are very, very interested in me. I think I’d help them create a summer retreat, too.
Incarnate, the only other all-girls’ school in San Antonio, was OK…just didn’t think they had any identity and it bugged me that the principal told me that they are profit-driven because of the university. Catholic schools shouldn’t be about that. I’d have some really nice benefits there for tuition and such…but it just didn’t feel right. It was not an official interview b/c the position isn’t posted yet. They are owned by the university so it has to be posted on their site first, but I just didn’t feel it there.
Antonian High School, one of the “best” high school (and which is co-ed), was my most interesting interview. OK let me preface this. I had REALLY awkward rapport with the principal pre interview. He didn’t want me to mail transcripts b/c they could get lost….and after he inquired about me via email, I wrote him about when I was coming and he picked an obscure date in May for my interview. I wrote him and told I wouldn’t be there then. His emails were really short and weird. I joked with Mark and my mom that I’d getthere and he wouldn’t remember I came…
So…I get there at 8:45 a.m., and it looks like they are setting up for an outdoor assembly. I walk up the front steps, and a man asks me how long I am going to be there. I tell him I don’t know…that I am meeting with Gilbert Saenz, the principal, for an interview. He tells me he’s Gilbert, and he asks me to move my car b/c they have an assembly at 9 a.m. (when my interview is scheduled). I move my car, sort of in disbelief…you know how much we teachers LOVE going to assemblies. I walk in, and he asks how much time I have. I tell him I have to pick up Perri at 10:30, and he says that’s good and we’ll have time to talk after the assembly.
I stand outside throughout the breast cancer assembly (where I wasn’t very impressed with the kids’ behavior and the lack of correcting them on the teachers’ part). It ends at 9:40, so I go back into the foyer of his office where my bag is. And wait. And wait. I walk around so people can see I’m there…so I can see if he’s around. No luck. So I continue to wait. And wait. I decide at 10:10, I’m leaving if he hasn’t come in…
At 10:08 a.m. he comes in screaming, “My interviewee.” He wants me to rearrange my schedule to meet with him or have coffee..never an apology. He tells me that he knows I’ll be working there. He tells me he wants me to teach sophomore English. When I inquire more about the program, he says he’s the principal and doesn’t know anything about what they teach. He still wants me to rearrange my schedule, and I explain I have to pick up my sister-in-law and that my time in San
Antonio is booked with house hunting. I didn’t get to ask any of my questions.
He gives me his card, tells me to call, asks how many years of experience, offers me the job, and tells me I’d make $45,000 and that I wouldn’t make more than that at any other Catholic school. I say thank you and leave. It was pretty unbelievable.
So I’m hoping for something at Providence or that I get an interview yet at the high school on base or the one out by our house. I’m also working on some adjunct positions. I figure if I only get an offer at Incarnate or Antonian, I’m going to maybe wait it out to see if I get any more interviews or to figure out where God wants me to be next year!
